Max ninth in Saudi FP1

Published on 18 April 2025 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen clocked the ninth fastest time in the opening training session of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) was quickest around the streets of Jeddah. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top three.

At the start of the session, Max is among the first drivers to take to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit but struggles to be among the pace setters. That honour belongs to George Russell in the Mercedes and the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who all vie for top spot.

At the halfway mark, the majority of the grid is in the pits preparing for qualifying simulations. The top five consists of Russell, Carlos Sainz (Williams), Norris, Max and Oracle Red Bull Racing teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Sainz is the first driver to set a time on the soft Pirelli tyres, soon followed by Max, whose first timed effort on the red side-walled softs lifts him to second behind Norris.

Over team radio, the Dutchman explains he is struggling to turn into the first two corners. Meanwhile, teammate Tsunoda is able to match Max’s pace. The Japanese driver’s best effort is only three thousands shy of the reigning champion’s quickest lap.

At the very front, Pierre Gasly sets the best time of the session. The Alpine driver remains at the top of the standings as the closing stages of session are used for long runs, meaning the lap times are no longer bettered.
