Max P3 after first day in Spielberg: 'We didn't have any big issues'

Max Verstappen finished the opening day of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend with the third-fastest time. After setting the second-best lap time in the first free practice session, the Oracle Red Bull Racing driver clocked the third fastest time in FP2, placing him behind the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Lance Stroll and Charles Leclerc completed the top five at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Max’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda finished the second practice session in seventh.
"We didn't have any big issues," Max says after the second free practice session in Austria. "We lack a bit of pace and had too much understeer, both on the short and the long run. So that is something we have to try to get rid of."
When the lights go green for Free Practice 2, it’s Franco Colapinto who is first out on track. Lando Norris is back behind the wheel of his McLaren, after handing his car over to Alexander Dunne earlier in the day, and quickly heads out to make up for lost time. The same applies for Charles Leclerc, who had to watch Dino Beganovic drive his Ferrari in the first session of the day.
Liam Lawson reports issues on his out lap, saying the car is pulling heavily to the right. He returns to the garage immediately. Meanwhile, Mercedes dominates the early stages of the session, with Kimi Antonelli leading George Russell. Norris clocks a 1:06.795 in his first timed lap of the day, good for a fifth place. Shortly after, Piastri takes the top spot with a 1:05.905, while Alonso jumps to third in his Aston Martin. Leclerc, on his first flying lap in Austria, sets a 1:07.396 and sits seventeenth.
Ten minutes into the session, Yuki Tsunoda heads out for his first laps of the second session, while Verstappen remains in the garage. Norris improves and takes over the top spot. Russell also sets a quick lap but loses time in the final sector and slots into P2.
After thirteen minutes, Verstappen takes to the track. Lewis Hamilton, struggling down in P16, tells his engineer there’s no pace in the car. He does improve and moves up to sixth. Max’s first timed lap in FP2 is a 1:05.654, placing him second behind Norris. At this stage, the top three is: Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri. Russell improves to within 0.03s of Norris and takes second, pushing Max to third. Verstappen attempts another flying lap but does not improve and returns to the pits. At the same time, Hadjar sets the fastest second sector of the session but is forced to abort and pit as well. The track quiets down.
With just over half an hour to go, most drivers return to the track, many on soft tyres. Piastri jumps to P1 with a 1:04.737, almost a full second faster than the fastest time from FP1. Norris immediately goes quicker with a 1:04.580. Lance Stroll slots into P3 with a 1:05.022. Tsunoda, who was down in P20, climbs to fifth at the halfway point of the session. The top five at the midway mark reads: Norris, Piastri, Stroll, Russell, and Tsunoda.
With 27 minutes to go, Verstappen heads back out on soft tyres, sitting in P12 at the time. Despite a less-than-perfect lap, he moves up to P7, just behind teammate Tsunoda. After two cooldown laps, Max pushes again. Although his tyres are already a few laps old and he runs wide in Turn 9, Max does improve his time and moves up to P3. With just over 15 minutes remaining, he returns to the garage.
Gabriel Bortoleto impresses in his Sauber, jumping to a surprising P8, well ahead of teammate Nico Hülkenberg, who is nineteenth. With just over ten minutes remaining, Max heads back out for a long run on the soft tyres, as do many others.
There are a few complaints over team radios: Alonso reports excessive bouncing, and Hülkenberg says he lacks front-end grip. During the long runs, Verstappen shows strong pace, setting the best average times, though he does not improve his fastest lap and remains third behind Norris and Piastri. Verstappen reports over the radio that he’s struggling with the front of the car and dives back into the pit lane with just over two minutes remaining. He switches to a fresh set of soft tyres for a practice start at the end of the session. Due to the long-run simulations in the final ten minutes, there are few time improvements. The session ends with Norris as fastest, followed by Piastri and Verstappen. Stroll and Leclerc round out the top five.
