Max sixth in Sao Paulo sprint quali: 'Then we'll have a problem'

Max Verstappen has qualified sixth for Saturday’s sprint race of the Sao Paolo Grand Prix weekend. Lando Norris took pole position ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Max’s Oracle Red Bull Racing colleague Yuki Tsunoda starts the sprint from P18.

“We have vibrations in the car, and we have driving issues. This is not what we want; we have no grip and the middle sector is awful”, explains Max after a disappointing qualifying. “It’s clear we’re not on the pace of the McLarens. If we’re not better on Saturday or get lucky with the weather, then we have a problem.”

As SQ1 gets underway, Yuki Tsunoda is the first driver to head out on track. His Red Bull teammate is one of the last ones to venture out. But when he does, Max is competitive by setting the quickest time of the session. Only Lando Norris goes quicker, meaning Max comfortably through to the second part of the session.

Further back, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, RB’s Liam Lawson, Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Williams’ Carlos Sainz join Tsunoda in the bottom five. The quintet therefor fail to progress to SQ2.

Bij de start van de twaalf minuten durende SQ1, waarin iedereen verplicht is met een set medium banden te rijden, is het negentien graden en er schijnt een zonnetje. Tsunoda is de eerste die de baan opgaat, terwijl Liam Lawson te kennen geeft dat er rotzooi ligt in de pitstraat.

Max wacht iets langer met naar buiten gaan. Als er nog acht minuten te gaan zijn, zien we de regerend wereldkampioen pas de baan op gaan. Zijn eerste sector is paars, waarna er twee groene sectoren volgen. Het gevolg is een snelste tijd voor de kopman van Red Bull na zijn eerste poging. Als uiteindelijk de vlag wordt gezwaaid voor SQ1 is Norris snelste voor Max, Alonso, Piastri en Russell en valt het doek voor Franco Colapinto, Lawson, Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon en Carlos Sainz.

Gabriel Bortoleto neemt het voortouw bij de start van SQ2 door als eerste de baan op te gaan. Ook Max is er dit keer redelijk vroeg bij en begint met een paarse sector, maar blijft op het einde van zijn ronde steken op P4, terwijl Alonso het veld aanvoert. Als iedereen zijn run heeft gedaan, staat Max achtste waardoor een extra run nodig lijkt. Lewis Hamilton, Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman en Bortoleto staan op dat moment in de gevarenzone.

In the second part of sprint qualifying, Max remains near the sharp end and sets the fourth quickest time behind Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Norris and George Russell (Mercedes). Albon (Williams), Gasly (Alpine), local hero Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Bearman (Haas) and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) all strand in SQ2. The latter was caught out by the yellow flags caused by teammate Charles Leclerc spinning.

Where it was mandatory to use the medium Pirelli tyres in SQ1 and 2, in the final part of qualifying, the remaining ten drivers have to use the soft compound. Max only does one flying lap. Despite a strong first sector, the Dutchman is unable to keep that advantage throughout the remaining two sectors and has to settle for sixth place.

Norris continues the good form displayed in practice and qualifying thus far and clinched his first sprint pole of the season. Kimi Antonelli will line up on the front row next to the championship leader with second row also featuring a McLaren (Piastri) and Mercedes (Russell)
