Thierry Vermeulen, Chris Lulham and Harry King have secured the title in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Championship in the Gold Cup, after finishing third in their class at the final race in Barcelona. The three drivers shared an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo, run by the 2 Seas Motorsport team, in the Verstappen.com Racing livery.
In September, Thierry and Chris already took the title in the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup, in the Gold class, in a Ferrari 296 GT3 run by Emil Frey Racing, meaning the pair also was crowned as overall Gold Cup champions of the GT World Challenge Europe. A stellar performance for the Verstappen.com Racing driver.
Thierry reflected: “First of all, we are very satisfied with the result. I am extremely happy with the championship win. Looking at my own stint in Barcelona, I am not so happy. We had a great starting position with the package we had. Into turn one and two it was fine. In turn three I decided to go on the outside, which I thought was the right call. I just lost the rear and nearly lost the car, so I lost a few positions. I regret that, but luckily the team and the other drivers really helped me out. Chris first and Harry with a great stint at the end. We still finished on the podium in the Gold Cup. So, all in all, I’m still very happy. It is a big team effort: the Verstappen.com Racing platform, the crew of 2 Seas Motorsport who has helped us tremendously throughout the whole year, all the mechanics and engineers. We went all in and I am very proud of everyone that is involved.”
Chris added: “The pitstop for a driver change was a little bit early, because of the full course yellow, and we lost some track positions. I straight away got into the rhythm all right. I made up a few positions on track, with one nice move against another Aston Martin. I was quite happy with how it went: the tyre management, looking after the track limits, which gave Harry plenty to work with and he made some nice moves in the third stint. It is a great feeling to finally take the title. The hard work was really done in Spa with the solid result and good pace we had there, taking the win in the closing minutes of the 24-hour race. It is a great performance from all three of us. We have been pretty clean and tidy with little mistakes from the three of us. We have not always been the fastest, but have had our strong moments of pace as well. As well from the team, 2 Seas Motorsport have done a fantastic job. No pitstop mistakes and the car has been flawless with no mechanical problems. You can’t ask for much more. I am super happy to wrap up the titles, the Endurance title and the overall Gold Cup title. Thank you so much to all the followers along this journey.”
Harry concluded: “The outcome of this weekend is what we have been dreaming of and working hard towards all year. This weekend proved some challenges. We suffered a bit of pace in the car earlier in the weekend, which caused some stressful moments, but ultimately the race pace was better than anticipated. Thierry had a good start, Chris could manage that and they put me in a nice position for the end of the race, where I could gain a few positions. I am happy with the performance and we ended up in crossing the line in eight overall, which was enough to claim the championship in the Gold class. I am absolutely thrilled with that result. It has been a fantastic season.”
