Max to P2 during qualifying in Singapore: 'So far a good weekend'
Published on 04 October 2025 by Kees-Jan Koster
Max Verstappen finished qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix in second place. George Russell clinched pole position with an impressive new lap record. Max, who felt he was held up by Lando Norris in the final stages, will therefore start tomorrow alongside the Briton. Oscar Piastri took P3, while Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris follow in P4 and P5.
When Max is asked about the incident in the closing moments of qualifying, he says: “That is what happens when there is a car cruising two seconds in front of you. That is noted. I will remember that.” When asked who it was, Max jokingly replies: “Not Oscar,” hinting at his teammate. “That was a shame,” he continues. “Otherwise, we would have been close for pole. It is always exciting here in qualifying.”
Max remains cautiously optimistic about the race: “Of course, I am a little disappointed not to be first, but so far this has been a very good weekend for us. The car is very competitive, so being second here is good. Naturally, I have been second here before. But it is positive that we were so close this time. It will be a long race tomorrow. I hope we get a good start, because there is less grip on the inside.”
It is still hot in Singapore: even at 9:00 pm (local time) temperatures hover around 30 degrees, with 35 degrees on the track surface. As soon as the light in the pit lane turns green, most drivers head out immediately for Q1. That includes Liam Lawson, who had crashed earlier in FP3 and was doubtful for qualifying. The New Zealander makes it. Max sets the first benchmark with a 1:30.317, good for P1. Isack Hadjar shaves off over a tenth to push him down to second. While many drivers stay in the pits, Norris takes advantage of a clear track. He goes top with a 1:29.932. Shortly after, Kimi Antonelli moves up to P2 before Lewis Hamilton takes over at the front.
Max’s second flying lap puts him P3 with a 1:30.028. In the closing seconds Pierre Gasly triggers a yellow flag: his Alpine grinds to a halt with a technical problem. Yuki Tsunoda manages a time just good enough for P10, though it is uncertain if it was set under yellows. For now, Gasly, Ocon, Colapinto, Stroll and Bortoleto are out. Tsunoda, Bortoleto, Hülkenberg, Russell and Stroll are under investigation for potentially ignoring the yellow flag.
Q2 begins with a 1:29.747 from Max, good enough for P1. Antonelli briefly looks set for P2, but his time is deleted for exceeding track limits. Charles Leclerc aborts his first flying lap and on his second attempt can do no better than P13. The Mercedes cars are quick: on his second run Antonelli has a big slide but keeps it out of the wall and even goes quickest. His teammate Russell then goes faster still. Verstappen slots in just one hundredth behind the Briton. Leclerc, despite a slow first sector, scrapes through into the final stage with a 1:29.914. Out go Hülkenberg, Albon, Sainz, Lawson and Tsunoda.
Russell delivers a stunning 1:29.165 despite brushing the wall, a new lap record. Max can only manage 1:29.340, leaving him P2, over a tenth behind the Brit. He loses too much time in the first sector, although his second and third are strong. Piastri, Antonelli and Norris follow, three to four tenths adrift of Russell. Both Max and Piastri bolt on fresh tyres for their second runs. Norris cannot improve and remains a disappointed P5.
Russell shows there is even more pace, improving to a 1:29.158. Piastri and Antonelli cannot get close. Max crosses the line last: he gains over a tenth in the first sector but fails to improve in the second and ultimately abandons his lap after being held up by Norris. That leaves Max in P2 behind Russell, with Piastri in third and Antonelli set to start fourth in tomorrow’s Singapore Grand Prix.
