Jos: "we are taking Minardi very seriously."

The rumours about Jos Verstappen were very present before the Belgian Grand Prix but grew even stronger after teh event. Before the GP the rumours were that Jos would return to Arrows, during the Friday practice everyone knew for sure that he would go to Toyota. During the same weekend Toyota went away in favour of Minardi. Jos had spent some time in their motorhome.Huub Rothengatter was seen walking to and from Minardi all weekend.

How did it feel to be at an F1 circuit again?
"I didn't fee lost, but after a day you've seen it all. If I can't race I feel useless on a circuit, I did enjoy myself though. I have spoken with a lot of people. I do know quite a few people at Minardi and Arrows. I've met some good friends like Pedro de la Rosa, Mika Salo and of course Michael Schumacher."

When you arrived in the paddock you were approached by everyone. You are not really anonymous.
"No, that's true. It was to be expected on a circuit so close to home. Everyone wanted to know what you want to know. A lot of the same questions, comes with the job. The rest of the day I walked around 'freely'."

What about the fans on the stands, have you seen them?
"Yes, I did. When they saw me they started shouting, whistling and waving their flags. Something like that makes me feel good."

The emphasis at the moment is on your connection with a Minardi seat. Do you see future possibilites if the team gets a new engine?
"If Minardi gets a new engine they will be a lot better. It is logical that we follow this team more closely and are open for possible negotiations."

Only a better engine doesn't guarantee better results.
"True, but it is a big leap forward. Look at Arrows with their Cosworth engine. Okay, the chassis will have to be adjusted to the new power source. More power effects the whole aerodynamic package, gearbox and suspension. Minardi has a good chassis. I have spoken with Greg Wheeler and he is very positive. I am sure that Minardi can do a good job with a new engine."

If Minardi doesn't get their new engine, would this mean that you are not interested anymore?
"It is quite clear: they are getting a new engine, hundred percent sure. An offer from Minardi is very interesting and will be considered very seriously."

Let's suppose Minardi do offer you a contract, what's next? Are you going to wait for other teams and taking the risks that go with it? How long do the fans have to wait for the final news?
"We are talking to various teams and comparing the options. Where are the chances, who can offer the best future prospects? Also: how long can or do we have to wait? If the situation occurs; when do we tell everyone? I don't always know in advance what is best. I hope it doesn't take too long, testing during the winter is very important. You have to be able to get used to the car and how earlier you can start doing this the better."

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is next. Thousands of mad tifosi on the stands. A circuit of top speeds and possibilites for overtaking. F1 romance, that must mean something.
"The circuit doesn't mean that much to me. I think that 'romance' is slightly exaggerated. This might be influenced by the Belgian Grand Prix which we had two weeks ago, that is my favourite circuit."

Now you are mentioning Spa; you did meet Tom Walkinshaw didn't you?
"Yes, I saw him from the corner of my eye and he was walking towards me. I think he wanted to shake my hand or have a chat. He must have seen that my posture that I didn't need that. I turned away and that was obviously enough for him to stop his attempt of approaching me."
