Alesi had a good start at the Italian Grand Prix but was soon taken over by Hill, who then led the race. Due to an expensive mistake Hill dropped out thus lessening his chances to become world champion. Villeneuve had problems too though with his car and dropped back to position 9. Leader in the race then became Alesi, followed by Schumacher. Other drop outs were among others Coulthard, Panis, Berger and Irvine. Jos position during the race ranged from 7 to 9 and he was performing OK. After pit stops from Alesi and Schumacher, Michael was able to take the lead from Jean. After Jos' second pit stop he was 9th and due to a drop out of Johnny Herbert he finished 8th. Schumacher won, Alesi was second and Hakkinen third. In the last part of the race Jos had some problems with his neck but on the whole he was very pleased with the race, though the Hart engine lacks power on the straigths. A more complete race report will follow. See Italian Grand Prix Results for the times.
