Hakkinen's time set in the first free practice wasn't matched by anyone in the second free practice. So after the second free practice Hakkinen was still fastest, followed by Hill and Berger, who strongly improved his time. Jacques Villeneuve dropped out due to an error of Diniz and Jos improved his time by 7/10 of a second, which moved him to a 16th position. See Italian Grand Prix Results for the times.
