After Max Verstappen’s triumphant weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, the fifth round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, mentor and father Jos Verstappen reflects: “To win three races in a weekend is unique. Max did a terrific job at Spa. Especially the overtaking manoeuvres he pulled off in the third race were incredible.”
The move in which Max swooped past John Bryant-Meisner and Esteban Ocon to take the lead was equally bold as it was impressive. Jos: “I saw that Max had the change to overtake them both and he actually pulled it off. It was beautiful and unique. Also, he dealt very well with Ocon after that. The way he out-braked him and passed him on the outside was impressive. Those are the moves the fans love to see.”
Despite the stakes, Verstappen senior remains calm during Max’ races: “I tend to remain cool during those exciting times on track. I know what Max is capable off and he doesn’t have to prove himself to me. I’ve seen it all before and now he showing it to the outside world."
He continues: “These races and fights are what it’s all about. This sort of skill and talent is what the fans want to see but it is also the standard required to succeed in the top motorsport categories. However, this kind of success doesn’t come out of the blue. We’ve worked hard for it over the past few years and I’m very proud of Max.”
Right across the podium at Spa, the iconic “Overtaking is an art” banner was displayed over the weekend. The text is a reference to days when Jos was actively driving. However, another banner reading “Overtaking is still an art” has been added next to the old one in honour of Verstappen junior who is more and more stepping is his father’s food steps.
