Video: Jos with Max in Renault R.S. 01 on Spa-Francorchamps

During the World Series by Renault-weekend, not only did Max do some demonstration runs in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing RB8, but he also played ‘cab driver’ with the new Renault R.S. 01. He took his father Jos for a spin as well, in the flashy yellow race monster on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Good enough for some hilarious footage.

“With those taxi rides, people are able to get a feel for how it is inside a race car. From the outside you have no clue what is happening on the inside”, Max shares with us, having enjoyed taking the 500 bhp, 3.8-liter V6-engine to its limits. “I have a feeling that some were startled.”

“The Renaul R.S. 01 has a pleasant ride and feels like a Renault 2.0 formula-car", Max tells us. “Especially in the medium fast corners, it handles very well. A very nice  car to take for a spin.” Even Jos was not all too happy to be seated next to Max in the car. “Jos doesn’t like it to be not in control. When you are sitting next to the driver, you have no clue when he’s going to brake and so you shoot forward in your seat. But I stay well within the limits.”

Nevertheless, Max absolutely didn’t spare his father, as the footage shows. “Jos told me to go easy. So at the first corner, I immediately slammed on the brakes”, he cheekily admits. “I was constantly braking late and hard!” It was a peculiar ride, one which Max quite stoical did his lap and Jos – highly skilled in motorsports – seated next to him, a far cry from relaxed.

“That was not normal man. You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”, is Jos’ reaction after his ride. Later he adds to that: “I find it hard to relinquish control and have blind faith.” Even if the driver bears the name Max Verstappen…
