Max third in Silverstone FP1

Max Verstappen started his British Grand Prix weekend with a third place in FP1. Mercedes set the pace with Lewis Hamilton lapping the Silverstone circuit quickest, followed by his team mate Valtteri Bottas. Max’s Red Bull Racing colleague Daniel Ricciardo set the fourth fastest time.
At the start of the session, Sebastian Vettel showcased the new ‘shield’ on his Ferrari. It is the latest idea developed for cockpit protection and FP1 saw the premiere of the feature out on track for a handful of laps.
The session follows the usual first practice session routine with most of the drivers completing their installation laps before venturing on longer runs. After forty minutes, when the teams hand in their first set of tyres, Mercedes heads the field, ahead of the two Red Bulls.
With half an hour left on the clock, the Red Bulls head out for a stint on the super-soft Pirellis. Both Max and Ricciardo improve their lap times and cement their positions behind the two Mercedes but in front of the Ferraris, the same positions the sextet would occupy at the end of the session.
After a troubled first half of the season, McLaren showed encouraging pace around the Northamptonshire track with Fernando Alonso in seventh and Stoffel Vandoorne in ninth.
