New minimum weight limit for Formula 1 cars in 2020

The World Motor Sport Council has agreed with upping the minimum weight for Formula 1 cars to 746kg (excl. driver), which constitutes a 3kg increase from last year’s regulations.

One of the reasons why the weight has been increased, is the addition of a second fuel sensor the cars need to run in 2020. The sensor is fitted to better scrutinise the fuel flow, following the controversy involving Ferrari’s fuel system. In addition, F1 teams have asked to loosen the weight limit to reduce costs.

It is not the first time the minimum weight of Formula 1 cars has been increased. From 2013 onwards, when the limit was 642kg, the weight has increased by over 100kg over the past seven seasons.
