Max after Budapest day 1: 'Hopefully we can solve a lot tonight'

Published on 17 July 2020 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen joined Ziggo Sport’s F1 Café via Zoom to discuss this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Max’ Friday did not go as previously hoped for. “No, it wasn’t good today, on both a wet and a dry track. We’ll have a look what parts we’ll put on the car tomorrow and then we’ll see what happens.”

Despite it being a somewhat frustrating day, the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver does not see his Friday as a wasted day. “It wasn’t a waste of time, but we can always improve. Today was a day where things didn’t go the way we wanted it, but hopefully we can solve a lot tonight.”

The second free practice session was a rainy affair with only intermediate and full-wet Pirelli tyres used. “If you use a set of inters, you’ll get a brand new set for qualifying. That’s why everybody did a lap on them. It means tomorrow you’ll get a set that hasn’t gone through a tyre warmer heat cycle. A fresh set is always better than one that has gone through a heat cycle. In terms of the full-wets, you don’t really want to use them, because you might need them in qualifying tomorrow. And we only have three sets of full-wets so you want to keep a new set.”

On the topic of weather, Max is indifferent to what the weather will do. “I don’t know what will happen and I don’t really care. We’ll do our best anyway and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
