Max reflects in Abu Dhabi: 'Less mistakes and more consistent in 2020'

Published on 10 December 2020 by Stefan Meens

This weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final round of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship. This year’s campaign was Max Verstappen's sixth season in F1. “Last year was good but you always learn. In 2020 I made less mistakes and I became more consistent. I know better when to take risks and keep the car in one piece. In terms of pure pace, there is not much to gain; every driver in Formula is fast. But experience makes you a better driver.”

Prior to the season, expectations were high. However, a combination of technical difficulties and bad luck did not help. Max: “At the start, we expected, or hoped, to fight for the championship. Sadly that didn’t happen. However, we scored a lot of podiums, driven good races and had fun. We’re still the second-best team in Formula 1. That’s not bad.”

Max continued: “It’s all about making progress. Nobody knows what 2021 will bring, but of course Mercedes will be quick and difficult to beat. That’s why it’s important for us to keep making progress and to keep understanding our car even better.”

“We don’t give up and everyone is motivated to keep pushing. We still have a winner’s mentality in the team so I’m looking forward to next year.”
