Max fifth in final Silverstone practice

Max Verstappen finished the third and final practice session of the British Grand Prix in fifth place. George Russell lapped the wet Silverstone circuit quickest ahead of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the top three.

Although the rain has eased for the start of FP3, the track is far from dry, hence all drivers opting for the green side walled intermediate Pirelli. Max has an exciting start to his session with a neat and tidy 360 degrees spin at Brooklands. The Dutchman calmy collects his RB20 and continues.

Pierre Gasly is less fortunate after beaching his Alpine following a spin. After a brief interruption due to a red flag as a result of Gasly’s incident, the drivers take to the wet circuit, again opting for the intermediate tyres. With the rain having stopped, the lap times start to tumble. Max, Hamilton, Norris and Russel all vie for the fastest lap. With 25 minutes to go, it is the latter that records the best effort of the session (1:37.529).

In the closing third, the times are no longer bettered as the rain returns to the former WOII airfield considered one of the classic tracks on the F1 calendar. Apart from a few timed laps, the session fizzles out with the two Mercedes topping the leaderboards.
