Max previews Abu Dhabi: 'I've already got four trophies at home'

At the final Thursday press conference of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, the FIA summoned Max Verstappen and his fellow championship contenders, McLaren team mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, to preview the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Although the Oracle Red Bull Racing driver trails championship leader Norris by twelve points, the Dutchman is as relaxed as ever. “It’s a 24-round season, some went better than others. In a lot of races, we didn’t have the pace to fight for the win on our own strength. But nevertheless, here we are. I’m proud of our season and how we came back in the second half. We’ll try to enjoy it until the end.”

Despite the championship going down to the wire, both Max’s parents will not be in Abu Dhabi. “My dad is contesting a rally in Kenya and my mum is at home, because we hadn’t planned them being here. But then again, I didn’t anticipate still being in the fight for the title.”

With four titles banked, Max feels the pressure is off. “I’m relaxed. I’ve nothing to lose. I enjoy being here and have enjoyed the second half of the year, working together with the team after a difficult time. We went from frustrated debriefs to joy about where we are. To win more is amazing. But for me it’s a bonus, even challenging for another title. We’ll just try to have a good weekend, as it’s out my own hands.”

Next to the three drivers in the press conference, the FIA have displayed the coveted championship trophy. “It looks like the same trophy, I’ve already got four of them”, smiles Max. “It would be nice to add a fifth. Of course I’ll try to win it, but I’ve already achieved everything I’ve wanted in Formula 1. The rest really is a bonus. We’ll give our best, try to enjoy it and see where we end up. Realistically speaking, we won’t be the fastest, but you never know. Anything can happen, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
