Max in Mexico: 'It's an extreme circuit'

With six podium finishes in a row, including two victories, Max Verstappen has travelled to Mexico City for round 19 of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. Ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, the Oracle Red Bull Racing driver discussed his chances of success at a track he finished first on five occasions.

“We had some problems in Austin during the weekend. We’ve tried to learn from that. Some things you can solve straight away, others take a bit of time. Some weekends come together better than others, so hopefully we’ll have a more straightforward race here”, reflected the four-time champion on last weekend’s US Grand Prix.

Due to the circuit’s location at high altitude, the Mexican GP poses a unique challenge; very low grip. “Normally we can compensate with the wing levels, but over here you are effectively running only one wing. The car will have significantly less downforce, which is a challenge on its own. The focus will even more be on the low-speed corner speed.”

The Dutchman added: “It’ll be about fine tuning during the weekend. We’ll have to understand how to best use the power unit and how we make sure to cool down the car and brakes. Although the atmosphere is amazing, the racing isn’t always amazing because the car quickly overheats when you’re following another car, so it’s very extreme.”

Following a strong string of results after the summer break, Max sits fourth in the championship with second place now a realistic target. “Of course we have improved a lot this year, but we’re not where we want to be. I only care about first place. I don’t really care if I’m second or fifth. Our aim is to reach P3 in the constructors’ championship.”
