In the first part of the free practice on Saturday the Schumacher brothers dominated untill the McLarens came on the track after fifteen minutes. David Coulthard beat Michael immediately and soon Mika Hakkinen drove a very fast time of 1:15,899, which stayed the best lap for a long time.

In the end Michael Schumacher managed to go even faster as Hakkinen, with a time of 1:15,738 he took first position. The top six was completed by Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher.
