After 30 minutes in the afternoon session of today's free practice, Jos was able to set his first and also his fastest lap time of the day in 1:20.286 which brought him to 20th position. Due to the fact that Jos was not able to set any lap times during the morning session, he was not able to set a good time. The afternoon session was used to try out several settings of the car, however there was not enough time left to find the right set up. At the end of the second session, new tyres were mounted on the car in an attempt to improve his time, however when he entered his final lap, the session was over.

Ik looked as if Eddie Irvine was fastest today until a few minutes before the end of session. At that time it was Mika Häkkinen who drove the fastest time in 1:16.515. The top six of today's free practice therefore is: First Mika Häkkinen in 1:16.515, second Eddie Irvine at 0.082, third David Coulthard at 0.192, fourth Heinz Harald Frentzen at 0.511, fifth Michael Schumacher at 0.914 and sixth Ralph Schumacher at 0.990 sec.

Afterwards Jos told us: "I can feel that the Stewart team is working on the cars with great enthusiasm. I am now driving the car that Jan Magnussen used to drive and it feels better than the T-car I drove while testing at Magny Cours last week."
